Brand Guidelines

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc. (the “Foundation”) is the non-profit owner of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell – commonly known as “Jazz Fest,” the world-famous music and cultural celebration held each year from the last weekend of April through the first weekend of May.  In addition to owning Jazz Fest, the Jazz & Heritage Foundation uses the proceeds from that festival for year-round programs in education, economic development and cultural enrichment. These include other festivals and concerts, educational programs, lectures and literary events, gallery exhibits, business networking conferences and more. The Foundation also is the owner of radio station WWOZ-FM, the Jazz & Heritage Archive and the George and Joyce Wein Jazz & Heritage Center. 

The names and logos for these diverse activities and assets are all protected by various federal, state, and common law trademarks and service marks (the “Foundation Mark(s)”).   Click here to see a list of the Foundation Marks.  

From time to time, we encounter uses of our names or logos in the media, on the Internet and in everyday commerce. This is especially true for the name and logo of Jazz Fest, which is internationally renowned. Some of these uses are allowed under the law and do not require a license. Other uses require a license. Some of these uses are always prohibited. 

In an effort to clarify these issues, and to prevent unauthorized uses of our names and logos, we have created these Brand and Trademark Guidelines. 

We strongly encourage anyone considering using the name or logo of Jazz Fest, or of any of our other programs, assets or activities, to carefully review these guidelines

These Guidelines address: 

  1. Why Brand Guidelines are important to the Foundation 
  2. Uses of Foundation Marks that always require a license 
  3. Limited circumstances where Foundation Marks can be used without a license 
  4. Uses of Foundation Marks that are always prohibited 
  5. A listing of Foundation trademarks 

Generally speaking, it is not okay to use the Jazz Fest name or logo – or any other name or logo owned by the Foundation – on any kind of merchandise. It is also not okay to use one of our protected brands to promote a product or service, especially if that use suggests some kind of affiliation with Jazz Fest or one of the Foundation’s other programs or assets. Below, we give examples of uses that constitute an infringement on our trademarks and service marks and uses that do not.
