"New Orleans is a community that comes together no matter what. We're a surviving community."

Irma Thomas shared her thoughts on the TODAY show about giving back to musicians.

Grammy winner Irma Thomas joined Hoda and Jenna to talk about the New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Foundation’s PSA to support Louisiana musicians as they suffer from the shutdowns due to the pandemic.  The music industry — who lift us up with the power of their craft so frequently — is in desperate need of our support.   The impact of the pandemic on Louisiana music and musicians has been, and continues to be, immeasurable.  Since March 2020, the Jazz & Heritage Music Relief Fund has been trying to mitigate some of the blow of loss of income to musicians and culture bearers statewide.

Thomas said, "New Orleans is a community that comes together no matter what. We're a surviving community. We don't let things get us down, we deal with it, and we move forward. Some things we can control and those we can, we do and those we can't, we let go.  Whenever there's a situation such as this one where all the musicians across Louisiana and the world, for that matter, are unable to do what they love to do, which is perform in front of an audience, this is a time when we really are hopeful because there are a lot of musicians who live paycheck to paycheck and since there's no paycheck it's really difficult for them right now.  So this relief fund that's being formed...is going to go a long way to get them through this," she continued, referencing The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation's new PSA to give back to the music community.  Watch the video!

When the COVID-19 pandemic rolled across the globe, it silenced live music everywhere. As home to some of the world’s greatest musical traditions, Louisiana is also home to some of its most gifted musicians. Musicians who have been struggling for nearly a year now, with no real end in sight.  Some of whom have left their instruments behind for good, finding new ways to make ends meet, and making it challenging for young musicians to receive music instruction from the city’s culture bearers.
