Sheri LaBranche Jackson, who served as the Chief Financial Officer of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation from 2010 to 2014, passed away on Nov. 27, following a long illness due to complications from a stroke suffered in April. She was 46. The entire Jazz & Heritage family mourns her loss and expresses its deepest condolences to her family.

Sheri was born on May 5, 1968, to her loving parents, Regina Powell LaBranche and Emile J. LaBranche, III, MD, in New Orleans.

In her early years, Sheri attended Mildred Osborne Elementary and St. James Major Catholic Elementary School. Sheri graduated from Cabrini High School in 1985. 

Following graduation, Sheri attended Spellman College in Atlanta, and later completed undergraduate studies at Xavier University of Louisiana in 1992 with a degree in Business Administration and a minor in Business Management.  She received a Master’s in Business Administration from the University of Phoenix in 2006.

In 1990, Sheri started dating the love of her life – Jessie D. Jackson, Jr.  Two years later, Sheri and Jessie married, on November 9, 1992.  They had two children: Devin Emile Jackson, born in 1992, and Denzel Malik Jackson, born in 1995. Jessie passed away in 2010.

Sheri was a hard worker with an entrepreneurial spirit.  Sheri and Jessie owned and operated, along with her mother-in-law, Betty Baker, Time Out Sports Bar & Grill – a hotspot for all sports in New Orleans East.  Concurrently, she owned and operated a tax business named Checks and Balances, serving many local non-profits and small businesses.

Sheri’s professional career spanned 24 years. She served as chief financial officer of the St. Thomas Iris Channel Consortium; as corporate assistant controller of Allied Home Mortgage in Houston; as accountant/consultant at Checks and Balances Accounting Services; as project accountant for Parsons Aviation of Louisiana; and as chief financial officer/director of Finance and Administration for the New Orleans Redevelopment Authority. Her last job – the dream job of her life – was as chief financial officer of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc.

Sheri leaves to mourn her sons, Devin and Denzel; her mother, Regina LaBranche; her father, Emile J. LaBranche, III, MD; her brother Steven E. LaBranche; grandmother, Marie W. Jordan; mother-in-law, Betty Baker. She also leaves to mourn her step-daughter, April Danielle Grant; her half-sisters, Erin & Evan LaBranche; godchildren, Tiffany, Emile and Zane Thomas. She also leaves to mourn her niece, Phalyn LaBranche; her aunt, Karen LaBranche (Ederson) Thomas; uncles, Kevin Jordan, MD and Derek Jordan; sister-in-law, Chrystal R. LaBranche; and step-mother Anne LaBranche. Sheri also leaves a host of other relatives, friends and associates.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, Dec. 6, at Rhodes Funeral Home (3933 Washington Avenue, New Orleans). Visitation is from 12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m.; the memorial service begins at 1:30 p.m.
