Heritage School of Music Auditions For Spring 2009 Semester

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., will hold auditions for its Don Moose Jamison Heritage School of Music a free after-school program January 22 and 24.

The auditions will be held:

Thursday, Jan. 22, at 3:45 p.m., at Lusher Charter High School (5624 Freret St.)
Saturday, Jan. 24 , at 10 a.m., in the Cook Fine Arts Center at Dillard University (2601 Gentilly Blvd.)

Classes will continue at the Lusher campus on Thursday afternoons through April 23. Classes will continue at the Dillard campus on Saturday mornings through April 18.

The auditions are open to music students ages 11 to 17 from the greater New Orleans area. Instruction will be in: brass, woodwinds, piano, bass, drums and voice.

The school accepts beginners to advanced students. Beginners and intermediate-level students are being directed to the Lusher campus; the Dillard campus will cater to more advanced students.

Kurt Rosenwinkel to appear in Dec. 6 Jazz Journey Concert

Internationally celebrated guitarist Kurt Rosenwinkel, one of the most strikingly original and influential new voices in jazz, will debut with his group in an exclusive one-night-only concert at 8 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 6 at the Contemporary Arts Center New Orleans (CAC), 900 Camp St.

The latest installment in the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundations Jazz Journey series, the free 90-minute performance is co-presented by the CAC and Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz.

Third Grants Category Now Open

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., is now accepting applications for the third cycle this year of the Foundations Community Partnership Grants program.

Applications are now available for grants in the category Culture & Heritage Documentation and Preservation. This category supports artistic work that documents or interprets the indigenous culture and heritage of Louisiana. Examples would include: art exhibits or installations; visual art, photography or film projects; literature (fiction or nonfiction); Internet or electronic media projects; documentaries; performing arts; or recordings.

Applications are due by December 1, 2008. Activities covered by the grant must occur between February 1, 2009, and January 31, 2010.

Although its not mandatory that all of the activities covered by the grant occur in Louisiana or that applicants be based in the state, the focus of the proposed work must be on an aspect of the culture and/or heritage of Louisiana. Priority will be given to projects initiated by Louisiana-based applicants, and for work that occurs in Louisiana.

Jazz Fest Volunteer Photographer Program

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation Archive uses volunteer photographers each year to document the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival presented by Shell. These photographers capture extensive images the people, crafts, music and food that make Jazz Fest so special.

The Archive is accepting applications until Nov. 30 from photographers interested in participating in the Jazz Fest 2009 Volunteer Photographer Program.

Jazz Culture of New Orleans Explored in Seminar

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival and Foundation, Inc., as part of its Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture Series, has partnered with Dillard University to present a two-day seminar titled, The Jazz Culture of New Orleans.

The seminar, which is free and open to the public, will be held Friday, Oct. 10, and Saturday, Oct. 11, in the Stern Hall Auditorium on the Dillard campus (2601 Gentilly Blvd.).

Jazz Fest Accepting Band Submissions Until Nov. 1

Congo Square Rhythms Festival Oct. 4-5, 2008

From traditional African dance to the latest hits by R&B singer Cupid, drums ancient and modern will beat at the second annual Congo Square Rhythms Festival.

The festival, which will be held on Bayou St. John at Orleans Avenue on Saturday, Oct. 4, and Sunday, Oct. 5, celebrates the historic role of Congo Square as the birthplace of American music. It was there that African slaves gathered on Sunday afternoons to practice their ancestral traditions influencing all of the styles that would emerge from New Orleans cultural melting pot.

Fall Festivals Start Jazz & Heritage Cultural Season

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation kicks off its fall cultural season with two free community festivals in October.

The second annual Congo Square Rhythms Festival will take place October 4 and 5 on the banks of Bayou St. John (at the intersection of Orleans Avenue), the same site as the annual Super Sunday Mardi Gras Indian celebration. (The festival had been scheduled to take place in Armstrong Park but had to relocate due to the ongoing construction and electrical work there.) Headline performers include: Cupid, Kermit Ruffins, Donald Harrison, Jr., and Big Sams Funky Nation, plus African dance, Mardi Gras Indians and local hip-hop and R&B artists such as Dizzy, Fifth Ward Weebie, Miss Tee, Tondrae and Elysian Fieldz.

The third annual Crescent City Blues & BBQ Festival will take place October 18 and 19 in Lafayette Square Park. Headline performers include: Marva Wright, Walter Wolfman Washington, Kenny Neal, John Mooney, Anders Osborne, Little Freddie King, Cedric Burnside and David Honeyboy Edwards.

The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundations free after-school music program, the Don Jamison Heritage School of Music, is gearing up for another semester of jazz education for young people.

The Heritage School of Music will operate at two campuses: Thursday afternoons at Lusher Charter High School and Saturday mornings in Cook Fine Arts Center at Dillard University.

Registration, skills assessments and first classes will be held:

Thursday, Sept. 18, at 3:30 p.m., at Lusher Charter High School (5624 Freret St.)
Saturday, Sept. 20, at 10 a.m., in the Cook Fine Arts Center at Dillard University (2601 Gentilly Blvd.)

The registration days had originally been scheduled for the first week of September but were postponed due to Hurricane Gustav.

The Heritage School of Music is open to music students ages 11 to 18 from the entire New Orleans area. Instruction will be in: brass, woodwinds, piano, bass, drums and voice.

The school accepts beginners to advanced students. Beginners and intermediate-level students are being directed to the Lusher campus; the Dillard campus will cater to more advanced students, who will receive instruction in composing and arranging, computer programs for music notation and music business.

Beginners should have completed at least some instruction on their instruments. They should be able to play a major and minor scale, identify notes on a staff and play at least one song. Students should own their own instruments and should bring them to the auditions.
