Ambassador Andrew Young, former United States Ambassador to the United Nations, will speak in a Tom Dent Congo Square Lecture at Tulane University’s Dixon Hall on Wednesday, Sept. 8, at 7 p.m.

Admission is free.

The occasion is the unveiling of a new exhibit at the Amistad Research Center Amistad Research Center of the papers of Tom Dent. Dent (1932-1998) was an author, journalist, playwright, historian and a former executive director of the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation. Our Congo Square Lecture Series is named in his honor.

Dent and Young grew up together in New Orleans’ Gentilly neighborhood, and went through many struggles together in the fight for civil rights in the 1960s.

The exhibit – Tom Dent: A Heavy Trip Through the South – examines the life and career of one of New Orleans’ most treasured poets, playwrights, and oral historians. The exhibition will run through September 30, 2010, in the exhibition gallery of the Amistad Research Center.
