Dr. Michael White
The New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation will present a free clinic on the history and performance technique of New Orleans brass band music. The clinic will take place at Perseverance Hall, in Armstrong Park, on Saturday, Feb. 23, from 12:30 p.m. to 3:00 p.m. Admission is free.
Traditional jazz clarinetist and historian Dr. Michael White will present on the history and cultural significance of the brass band tradition in New Orleans music. He will also demonstrate and instruct on the proper performance of the traditional brass band sound.
Also appearing will be members of the Stooges Brass Band, who will instruct on the proper performance and style of the contemporary brass band sound.
The clinic is an opportunity for band directors and students to learn about brass band style and technique in preparation for our second annual Class Got Brass competition, a contest for New Orleans style brass bands from Louisiana middle schools and high schools. All Class Got Brass participants are encouraged to attend. The general public is also welcome.
Band directors planning to attend (hopefully with their students) are asked to fill out a simple RSVP form here.
Our thanks go to the National Park Service for providing Perseverance Hall as a venue for this event.
